As a divorced dad, co-parenting can be...a lot.
When you're used to having a certain level of control and decision-making power, it can be difficult to shift gears and work with your ex to raise your kids.
But even though it's not always easy, co-parenting is important for the well-being of your children.
So if you're struggling to figure out this whole co-parenting thing, here are a few tips that might help:
- Communicate openly and honestly with your ex. This doesn't mean you have to be best friends, but it does mean that you need to be able to communicate effectively about your kids. This can help prevent misunderstandings and avoid conflicts.
- Try to be flexible. Kids' schedules are always changing, and it's important to be able to roll with the punches and be willing to make adjustments as needed.
- Put your kids first. It's natural to want to do what's best for your kids, but sometimes our own emotions and desires can get in the way. Remember that your main goal is to do what's best for your kids, even if it means making sacrifices or doing things you don't necessarily want to do.
- Seek outside help if needed. Co-parenting can be challenging, and it's okay to ask for help if you need it. Whether it's through therapy, a support group, or just talking to a trusted friend or family member, don't be afraid to reach out for support.
- Give yourself some space to have bad days. Divorce is hard. Co-parenting can be frustrating. Resisting those facts can make things even harder.
Co-parenting isn't always easy, but it's worth it for the sake of your kids.
With a little patience, flexibility, and communication, you can make it work.
